Rum’s Eg was an Art & Craft Gallery with a Cafe situated at the lower end of Bell Street, Romsey. Set up as a community interest centre, Rum’s Eg supported local craftsmen and women with exhibitions, educational events and activities.
The name ‘Rum’s Eg’ derives from the early middle ages when Romsey was believed to be a monastic retreat. ‘Eg’ was a word to describe an island (Romsey is surrounded by water in the form of small rivers and streams). And ‘Rum’ is likely to be an abbreviation of a name such as Rumwald (glorious leader). Ergo, Rum’s Island.
The business closed in March 2018 although many of the artists and craftspeople who exhibited and contributed continue to flourish.
